{"id":3227,"date":"2015-09-09T13:43:54","date_gmt":"2015-09-09T13:43:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vivianefreitas.com\/en\/?p=3227"},"modified":"2015-09-15T13:52:49","modified_gmt":"2015-09-15T13:52:49","slug":"thyroid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vivianefreitas.com\/en\/thyroid\/","title":{"rendered":"Thyroid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The thyroid is a gland located in the front of the neck, is shaped like a butterfly and has two lobes (right and left), joined by a central part, called isthmus.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hormones produced by the thyroid are the tyroxine (T4) and tri-iodothyronine (T3) and they are critical for the regulation of body temperature, blood pressure, cardiac frequency, muscle strength, bowel function, memory, mood and cholesterol among other functions.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  wp-image-27347 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vivianefreitas.com\/en\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/4\/files\/\" alt=\"glandula-tiroide\" width=\"506\" height=\"344\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The lack of producing these hormones properly causes symptoms related to the failure thereof, since the imbalance in the production of T3 and T4 can manifest as hypothyroidism (decrease) or hyperthyroidism (increase).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>What are the main diseases caused by this and their symptoms?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>1- Hypothyroidism<\/strong><\/span>: results from a decrease or complete absence of thyroid hormone production and can be caused by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lack of TSH stimulation by the pituitary gland, as in some brain diseases;<\/li>\n<li>Lack of iodine in the diet;<\/li>\n<li>Autoimmune diseases, such one that occurs in the thyroid called Hashimoto, caused by antibodies against the thyroid cells;<\/li>\n<li>After surgery with partial or complete excision.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Symptoms range from: fatigue, drowsiness, lethargy, lack of concentration, dry and rough skin, hair loss, weight gain, menstrual irregularities, constipation and in the most severe cases heart failure.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>2- Hyperthyroidism<\/strong><\/span><strong>:<\/strong>\u00a0the opposite of hypothyroidism . In hypothyroidism there is an increase in hormone production triodes which is caused in most cases by:<\/p>\n<p>Antibodies (80% of cases), the presence of antibodies that stimulate increased production of hormones leading to the appearance of diffuse toxic goiter or serious diseases.<\/p>\n<p>The most common symptoms include anxiety, insomnia, nervousness, irritability, loss of weight, palpitations, diarrhea, heat intolerance, muscle weakness, and ophthalmopathy.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>3- Nodules:<\/strong><\/span> are due to a number of cells that are organized within the gland, forming solid or liquid nature of lumps (cysts).<br \/>\nMost lumps are astigmatic and are not related to cancer. They are usually detected by chance and can\u2019t alter the production of T3 and T4.
